Jim Corbett National Park

The 1st wild life reserve established in 1936 is Jim Corbett National Park. It lies in nainital district of Uttarakhand, named after a hunter turned conservationist.

The entire reserve area is mountaineous & falls in the shivalik ; outer Himalayan region.

Tourism is allowed in selected areas of Corbett Tiger Reserve (Buffer Area) so that people get an opportunity to see splendid landscape and the diverse wild-life living there. In recent years more than 70,000 visitors have visited the park from India & abroad.

Weather :
1143 meters above sea level with annual rainfall 1000-2800 mm. Temperature ranges from 4°C in winter to 42°C during summer.

To Reach:
Jim Corbett National Park is well connected by road and train. One can reach to national park from New Delhi by train; as well as bus services are available from Jaipur, Agra, Haridwar & Major Cities in North India.

Flora:
More than 600 species of trees, shrubs, herbs, bamboos, grasses, climbers & ferns are observed in the park. Most visible trees here are sal, sisoo, khair, chirpine, date, palms, jamun, aamla, bel kusum, mahua and bakli. Some artificially planted trees like teak, eucalyptus, jacarauda, Silver Oak and Bottle brush also bloom in this forest.

Rivers:
Wildlife is highly dependent upon rivers for they provide drinking water to all fauna and aquatic species. Ramgangais the main life line of this forest. Kosi, Sonanadi, Mandal Palani and Sots are the tributaries of Ramganga which flows 40 KM inside the park.

Fauna:
The elusine Tiger is most celebrated animal in the park. About 3000 to 4500 surviving Bengal Tigers are in India – most of which are in this park due to launch of “Project Tiger”, which is initiated in 1973.

Tiger is an indicator of healthy ecosystem – it keeps the population of ungulates under control and the forest also live which means good air and plenty of fresh water, both which affect our own survival.

Other Animals conserved in the park are:

  1. The Asian Elephant
  2. Four Species of deer – Spotted deer, Hog Deer, Sambar, Kakar
